Who Can Work in Fintech?

In the sea of job possibilities nowadays it might be tricky to find the profession that you will really excel at. Apart from that, job competition is stronger than ever before, so it doesn’t matter if you are an IT guy, an accountant or a marketing professional – finding a job can be quite challenging as there are far more people than job opportunities. That’s also one of the reasons why many people pursue careers that do not necessarily correlate to the formal education that they have gotten. That is why we always need to think outside of the box. In that thinking process, we might be lucky enough to not only find the right profession for us, but also find a profession that is going to be quite lucrative and that will provide us with a comfortable life. Fintech is one of the industries that can provide this. But what is this industry all about? Fintech is one of those sectors that you need to keep an eye on as it’s on the rise, but what comes to one’s mind upon hearing the word “Fintech” is finance and technology. So, can only people who have obtained degrees in those two professions be a part of a Fintech company? Not necessarily, as this field offers so much more. Take a look at what happens in the backstage of a Fintech company and perhaps you will find it motivating to find a position that you will like and want to devote to in this field:

Why have Fintech as an option?

First and foremost, it is very important to know why to pursue a career in financial technology. This might come in handy to plenty of people who are thinking of changing professions as shifting from one area of business into another is never an easy step. It’s all the more challenging once the sector you are moving to is new to you. Fintech is a relatively new sector and it’s rapidly evolving, which makes it possible for you to work for an industry that’s dealing with state-of-the-art technology and that’s going to be huge in the future. Did you know that 3 out of 4 people in the world use the services of Fintech companies without even knowing it? Apart from being very modern, companies in financial technology offer plenty of job opportunities as more and more Fintech companies appear every year. Working in this field is rather innovative, can be very creative and can give you the option of enriching your professional skills by working with professionals from the field. Finally, it’s important to know that this is a global industry, meaning that you will get the chance to work with people from all around the globe.

What departments can you find in Fintech companies?

Take any company as an example, and you will not fail to realize that it takes more than one person to make it a successful one. Each industry has more than it meets the eye, and this is certainly something that you should bear in mind once you’re researching other work options. As far as Fintech is concerned, the good thing is that you do not have to be knowledgeable about finance and technology per se, as it offers a plethora of other work opportunities. Since it’s a relatively new field, many fail to notice all the other aspects that Fintech has to pay attention to in order to succeed.

Since Fintech includes both technology and finance the most (as already hinted in the term of the business), it’s very safe for you to pursue a career here if you’re interested in finance. Plenty of bankers turn to this option as not only is it quite lucrative, but it’s also a job that’s very future-forward. Since Fintech companies deal with finance, the positions of the Finance Director and Financial Manager are quite common and popular. Moreover, bearing in mind that this area of business is still on the rise, many companies also hire Finance assistants, which means that you do not need to have the finance knowledge of a Finance Director, but you will definitely need to have the motivation to thrive. Candidates who apply for a Fintech job in the Finance department will be responsible for the preparation, analysis, and presentation of financial reports of different kinds, analysis of complex financial data, and overseeing all financial operations. Financial analysts, on the other hand, work on managing and creating budgets, run business studies, and make forecasts about future revenues of the company and the market trends.

Since we are already talking about finance, accounting is also one of the departments that you will find in a Fintech company, and this department works very closely with Finance. This is also one of the several positions that many people do not know exist in this area of business – so many accountants do not even know that this is a business they can pursue their career in. However, bear in mind that you might need to acquire somewhat new knowledge as a Fintech accountant requires slightly new different skills and this is the reason why it is believed that financial technology will transform the role of future accountants. The key responsibilities of a Fintech accountant are posting and processing journal entries to make sure that all of the financial transactions are recorded, tracking, recording the accounts receivable and accounts payable, and performing reconciliations.

Since it’s the 21st century, it would be impossible to imagine a big company without its developers. Fintech encompasses technology to a great extent, and developers can easily find a job in this business area. The demand for skills apps is skyrocketing, especially bearing in mind that there are 2 billion users that use these services. However, developers, in this case, will be working on finance-related projects, but that can only be a plus for some, especially the developers who are interested in this area of business or for those who are ready to step out of their comfort zone and accept new challenges. This job might also be a creative one as they will be developing and creating different payment platforms, either for banks or other world payment institutions. Another position that might fall into this category is the position of a Blockchain developer. According to a study conducted by LinkedIn, blockchain developers are at the top of the list of the five most emerging careers.

Business Operations / Human Resources

Not even one company can work well without the people who make the magic happen. The department of Business Operations and Human Resources plays quite an important part of the whole system, just like in any other company. Even though a lot of people do not think of these two departments upon hearing the term Fintech, it’s actually a big department that’s very much needed, and that includes several different positions. Apart from the Head of the HR department who should work on employing the best professionals of the industry, you might also find HR generalists and Business Operations managers whose job is to make sure everything runs smoothly. Companies in Financial Technology work with huge figures and there’s no room for mistakes. If you are organized, punctual and possess sufficient tech knowledge, this is definitely a career you can pursue.

As it deals with finance, it is very safe to say that Fintech is an industry that is very vulnerable to risks of different kinds – ranging from not only financial exposure and investments, but legal compliance as well. This is why Risk managers are very valuable in this business. Their responsibilities are to analyze the risks of a certain business and to mitigate their effects in the best possible way. Apart from that, they will be working on preventing those particular risks in the future and also making sure that the company achieves its business objectives. If you are someone who wants to pursue a career in this field, you can keep your eyes open for the position of a Risk Analyst and then, over time, become a Head of Risk in the company you (will) work for.

If you have a degree in finance or economics (sometimes even accounting might work as well), and you do not find yourself satisfied with the current position, you might want to think about the career of a Compliance expert. This department of Compliance is very closely related to Risk, even though they are completely different fields. Compliance experts are in great demand, and it is they who decide if a company or an individual complies with all the necessary regulations. Money laundering is one of the biggest problems the world is facing, and compliance experts are the superheroes from the backstage who fight it. The titles in this department range from KYC Officer (Know Your Customer), AML Compliance Officer (Anti-Money Laundering) to Compliance Manager.

It is not a secret that we live in a world that is very vulnerable to malicious threats from cybercriminals all over the world, but it seems that Fintech companies can succumb to these villains just a little bit more often. This is one of the reasons why many Fintech companies hire cybersecurity professionals, as it’s always better to be safe than sorry. This is one of those positions that are expected to grow even more in the near future, so it’s a great career to pursue if you want a job in Fintech.

Upon obtaining a law degree, not plenty of people think in the direction of working for a financial company, nor any other that is not related to the profession they have chosen. However, big companies always need a Legal department in their offices, and Fintech is not different at all. Working as a legal representative at a Fintech company will certainly give you the option of doing something meaningful and innovative, and you can use your skills and experiences and combine the rules and regulations of both the finance and the IT industry. People working in the Legal department in Fintech companies are expected to support Money Transmission Licenses and stay up-to-date with global financial regulations.

Management / Product Management

Fintech might not be associated with physical products per se, but such companies certainly have a product that they want to place. This might come in many forms, ranging from different new and alternative payment options to payment cards that are completely new to the market. That is why product management is an important branch of this industry. The Product Manager, one of the most well-paid jobs in the business, is responsible for guiding the success of that specific product and set the strategy, roadmap and to make sure that the product is well-defined. If you already know how challenging the job of a Product Manager in general is, think about what it is to have that job in the field that many world citizens still see as somewhat abstract. However, this is one of the jobs where creativity and skills are very much needed, so it’s a great option for any organized Product Manager who wants his career to take a small turn to finance and technology.

Sales and Marketing

Last but not least, sales and marketing represent very important steps in the field of Fintech.  Every company has certain services they provide or products they offer, and one of their main goals is to find clients who will use those particular services. This is where marketing and sales step on stage. Both of these departments, working closely, work on bringing new leads to the company and selling their financial products. Even though one might not find this field quite creative for marketing, the truth is completely different as there are plenty of things to think about before selling your product. Marketing professionals in Fintech work in creating marketing campaigns that are relevant to the field, create meaningful content for their websites based on what people actually want to know more about. The Sales department is there as the next link in the chain who work very hard to offer the final product of the company to the targeted people. People who want to work in the Sales department of a Fintech company need to keep up with all the latest financial trends and follow the industry very closely.

To sum everything up, Fintech is a sector that might be new to some, but that’s not the reason why not to have it as an option if you want to change your current profession or are looking for something new and innovative. Apart from Singapore, China and the USA where this sector is very strong, it’s also rapidly evolving in Europe. There are plenty of European countries that are homes to some of the best Fintech companies in the world. This means that if you want to find Fintech jobs in Serbia, the Netherlands, Lithuania or any other European country, make sure to do your research.
